One simple method estimates maximum heart rate as 220 minus age, then places Zone 2 at roughly 60% to 70% of that estimate.

Talk-test research supports speaking comfort as a low-cost way to guide intensity, but agreement with laboratory thresholds is not perfect. Treat it as feedback, not a lab test.
